    DIY Machining Question.

It seems no one make these anymore.

    http://www.varizoom.com/product-p/vzfcs-wp-2.5.htm

Block of steel, hole in the middle, 1/4-20 UNC threaded, somewhere between 1.5 and 2 lbs. After looking at various machine shops around us, I am pretty sure we can manage this on our own, probably.

However do you fine gentleman have any insight before we go at this?

It is a weight for a steadicam to make our camera weigh more, increases the inertia of the system, in case you were wondering wtf its for.

Janice Arthur makes them for lots of cinematographers: steadijan@hotmail.com

    2, 6.5, 11, 15 lb plates or 7", 8.5", 9.5" rods to make a cage.

My school had a cage from her for when we ran DSLR's or smaller cameras on our Archer and Phantom.

MK-V make cages as well, though I'm not really familiar with their product.

On the cheap side I've used ankle weights from Dick's or asked machine shops for scraps.

What steadicam/camera combo are you using out of curiosity?

Yeah, her plates are bad ass(and $200), I bet the MK-V ones are the same story, we are looking at cheap seats here since its paintball, not hollywood.

In our case we are using the Laing system.

Pretty well made Chinese knock off, since the legit ones from Tiffen are 4 times the price. It has all the controls in the right places, but the springs are a little stiff for a 3lbs DSLR, so I am building a 4 hour battery system and wanting to add some more weight to make it less twitchy when chasing people all over the rec field.

I know nothing about this application, but I would be surprised if you pay much less than $200 for a machine shop to do something like that in steel.

Might be worth the effort to do a simple aluminum jig that takes standard weights or something?

haha, yea I'm a bit spoiled from my school days :x Had to step down to a Glidecam, can't wait till I can afford a real one again.

What kind of batteries are you gonna run on it? A big V-lock or AB might be enough weight along with a couple weights. Those can get pricey though, but at least you can power everything pretty much with them.

It looks like you might be able to swap out that arm for a real one eventually? Can't remember what the vest side mounting point looks like.

The Glidecam weight plates are fairly cheap too:

    Almost 13 ounces, for $15

As for batteries we are using this.

    plus this
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...A1S9OMG83CAC4S

Which will step the 9v down to the 7.2 the camera wants, I would be scared if it wasnt Lanparte, they make good stuff.

and some rails and blocks, both to make the camera longer and power it. If I could sell the boss on some Antons, I certainly would.

I found those plates, but I was hoping I wouldnt have to stack them to get up to the weight I wanted, might just have to deal.

In any case Ill show you guys the result when it gets done.
