Evers overstepped his authority. He got called on it, caught, and stopped. Would he have been right to postpone the spring primary? From a safety standpoint, probably. Although there were precautions in place when I went to the polls this morning, and it actually made for a very easy voting experience. Evers probably could have had a team put together a few options other than just "POSTPONE!", and had several ways to go with this election... which, by the way, was more significant than just a Presidential primary. My ballot had the local mayor and city council seats up for election, and those incumbent's terms expire in ten days. Just as important, there's a seat on the state Supreme Court that was on there, which is probably why Evers wanted the delay in the first place.
Word from the troops is that the TR's captain had gone through the chain of command trying to provide a healthy environment for his sailors and Marines, and was ignored. That's a huge breakdown in the chain, which relies not just on obeying orders and procedure, but also trust. When the chain of command failed the captain, he committed career suicide as a last-ditch effort. He knew what he was sacrificing, and why. And it takes a lot of links in that chain, most of them career military and NOT politically appointed, to fail to get to this point.
Personally, I think the guys at the pointy end of the spear should be the ones who dictate policy. Staff weenies have their place, but it's not in deciding how to fight a war. Many times the guys who pull the triggers aren't super polished, but you're going to get a straight assessment of things asking a buck sergeant, or a platoon leader lieutenant, over a colonel who's spent 15 years moving from one desk to another. That staff guy might be able to write a great paper, but he's not the guy carrying the rifle and 120 pounds of field gear, or having to fire a missile he hopes works, or the guy in the sonar room of a sub working on making that billion dollar sub actually do what it's supposed to even though it doesn't right out of the box.
And there's the racism comment again. It's probably racist that I bring it up.
