It can be the ECU and the previous owner may have known when they let it go cheap.
OBD won't pull a code as the code is not in the diag computer. Hence the ABS light on and not the check engine.
I would check the sensors, but i am thinking more than someone did improper maintenance and lect something out of whack, hence no light on forward driving, but light on reverse.
I can talk to my friend(ASC CERT Undercar specialist) about it. Got the details of the taco?

Nah, previous owner is my boss. Doubt he'd intentionally screw me. Doubt he knows much about it at all.
It's a 2.4 liter standard cab 2003
Ah, well best case is it just needs brake fluid which you can check and change yourself pretty easily. The wheel sensors are pretty pricey, but also usually easy to change. The ECU is the only other thing I know of... don't think there's usually relays on the circuit.
Not sure on a Tacoma that new but I doubt they changed over from drums in the rear.
Try readjusting your drums on my 1990 pickup the rear drums only were adjusted through the ebrake which is fine on my manual truck but most automatic drivers don't ebrake all that often and then the rear drums come out of adjustment. Also check to see if any axle grease or brake fluid got into the drums it could be a seal issue or a broken line as well.
You can also get brake codes pulled by a dealership I shudder to think what costs are for abs sensor and modules though.
Check the connectors inside the control box on the passenger firewall along with the wires leading to the wheel sensors. I've worked on one that was doing wonky shit that came from someone jumping the battery using the wrong polarity......random lights came on and off for no apparent reason but the ecu got shorted and didn't show any codes....needless to say that truck is getting a diesel swap, should be a cool truck when its done...
Yeah, looks like I have a ground issue somewhere in the tail lights, I bet that's triggering the whole problem.
Now to hunt that down...

I work for the company building the Paragon
That's super frustrating... good luck!
I had a faulty brake light switch in my car that affected both the ABS capabilities and the cruise control. Just a $10 switch under the brake pedal. Thankfully, that threw an OBD code so it was a little easier to track down, but some seemingly little things can wreak havoc on adjoining systems.
I'm spending some time with my great uncle in Oregon, building his latest project, a 3-wheeler.
Incredibly good fun, he's full of stories about his time at Lotus & Alvis.
